Whiplash Troubles: The Truth about Neck Sprains
Car accidents are serious and definitely need to be taken seriously. One of the most common injuries in car accidents, especially rear enders, are neck injuries.
These neck injuries definitely include neck sprains. Neck sprains most commonly occur in car accidents or sports injuries. It is normally referred to as whiplash. Whiplash is an injury to the ligaments in the neck.
There are seven vertebrae in the neck that are all attached with ligaments. Therefore, neck sprains can occur to any one of these ligaments or all of them even.
Neck sprains typically occur when there is extreme force that has made the neck move backwards past its normal range of motion and then snap back forward.
Unlike other sprains which are typically characterized by localized pain and swelling, there is a whole variety and series of symptoms that can occur with neck sprains. Therefore, if you have been in a car accident and want to know what the signs and symptoms of whiplash are, then here they are.
The first is of course pain that is found at the back of the neck which increases with movement. Pain can also be found at the sides of the neck. Again, unlike other sprains, pain in the neck can be delayed.
This means that the neck pain does not start for twenty four to forty eight hours after the injury as occurred. The pain can also spread to the shoulders and back. The shoulders and back can also experience spasm as well.
The person can also experience head ache which starts at the base of the head where the head meets the spine. One of the symptoms that is not typically thought of is a sore throat.
Again some of the un-thought of symptoms are related to mood. Neck sprains can cause irritability and fatigue. This is in addition to trouble sleeping and concentrating. Then it is good to watch for a decrease in mobility and range of motion of the neck. It is also necessary to pay attention if there is some tingling or numbness in the arms and hands.
With all of these symptoms, someone can experience one, some, or all of them. Because neck sprains are often the result of a car accident it is important to always see a doctor as well as your insurance broker.
It is important to keep the injuries and symptoms documented for law and insurance purposes, especially if you are the victim of a wreck less or careless driver.
So, ensure that the best possible care and attention is taken when a neck injury is obtained in a car accident.
